Improving adaptive control methods for energy and hydraulic operating modes of pumping stations based on water demand forecasting in the context of climate change

Climate-driven daily and seasonal variability in water demand reduces the effectiveness of fixed-schedule pumping-station operation. This paper proposes a predictive-adaptive method that converts a short-term demand forecast into flow and head set-points and jointly selects pump combinations, rotational speed and operating duration. The control criterion is formulated as a multi-objective function incorporating specific electricity consumption, flow and head deviations, and the number of pump starts. Constraints on flow, pressure, frequency, reservoir level, cavitation margin and starts are imposed. A reproducible calculation-demonstration scenario is presented for a model station equipped with two 11 kW pumps. The calculated values are not treated as field-test results; they are used to verify the logical operation of the closed loop linking monitoring, forecasting, hydraulic set-points, energy optimization and control.
